STATEMENT
1. A brief explanation of your painting style.
I began as a bit of a neo-expressionist, and developed into more of a neo-fauvist. I tend to blend a bit of figurative, abstract, and illustration art... with great attention paid to color (or lack thereof). Contrast is also an area i pay much attention to. Much of the work also shares principles of lowbrow and superflat, though comes largely from different influences.
2. Any subjects or themes you have approached.
much of my earlier expressive works were largely personal involving themes of alienation and the struggles of the aspiring artist. while abstract works were largely based in relationships, some personal, but most were on a larger scale socio-political commentary in some form or another.
sin is also a recurring theme... lust, greed, vanity... the idolic worship of pop icons in contemporary society, the blatant use of sex as a marketing tool by the very same magazines, tv shows, etc that demonize sex and exploitation of women at every turn.
corporate feudalism, alienation, struggle, the religious nature of pop icons in contemporary society, the blatant use of sex as a marketing tool, the seven deadly sins, balance,
3. A discussion of the technical side of creating the work or the materials and mediums you have used.
acrylic, gouache, ink, graphite, clay, found objects (assemblage), music sampling and mixing, some video editing, papier mache, paper, canvas, linen
4. Method used for creating the work.
the large majority of the work is handled on the first sitting... many end alla prima. the rest evolve slowly... in some cases you could call me george lucas with almost endless reworking
5. Important influences, other artists or writers.
usually a very supportive family, mother & grandmother working for themselves had a big impact, had me thinking a little outside of the box at an early age. Schiele & Tolousse-Lautrec (style), Basquiat (raw power, anger), Giger (psychology), Rothko (powerful simplicity, color), Bacon (basically a combination of the latter 3, anguish)... and i absolutely adore the work of Filmmaker John Waters. I think I could easily attribute much of my use of loud colors the over-the-top style of he and Camp in general.
6. Use of colours and the qualities of the colours.
high contrast.
7. Why you enjoy making art.
always been a man of few words and painting gives me my voice, it makes sense of my thoughts in a way that words have difficulty doing... or perhaps painting just makes it possible for me to put my thoughts in order
8. How your work differs from other artists.
Growing up almost completely devoid of any exposure to the contemporary art scene i like to think i just have my own way of thinking and my own goals that exist outside of the mainstream art scene. the goals i have are strictly personal, as i presently feel i am still in training
9. What inspires you to create art.
10. Your goals as an artist.
at this point it is to make a living doing what i love to do
11. Any subject matter.
figurative work, abstract, assemblage
12. Your own personal background or perspective.
